It’s a major milestone for us: thanks to your help the LBW Trust has just reached its 2010 goal of supporting 100 disadvantaged students in India, Pakistan, South Africa and now also Uganda.

In the first half of the year the LBW Trust has taken on the fees of 20 new students at the Prerana Nurture Merit college in Bangalore, India, where gifted and needy students are assisted in their chosen academic careers. We are looking forward to a September visit to Sydney from Piroja Mehta from the college.

We have also funded tertiary scholarships for ten students from the village of Namwendwa, Uganda; through our new partnership with the Australian-Ugandan NGO One Village. Our congratulations to the Ugandan students, including Helen Salaamu, Alex Issabirye, Pascal Mageni, Zakalia Semakula, Geoffrey Kawayo, Fred Wanala and Otala Awali. These students have now commenced studies in teaching. Alex Luddu and Julius Mbeeko are being trained in brick laying and Joshua Mugabe is doing a motor vehicle course.

They join our existing scholarship students at the Vikash Educational Trust in Orissa, India; at Namal College and SPADO (Sustainable Peace and Development Organisation) in Pakistan; and at various institutions in South Africa.

S C Choudhury, who works with our NGO partners the Vikash Educational Charitable Trust (VECT) in India, sends these pictures of students receiving their scholarship cheques from LBW in October.

He writes:   “Please find a few photos of distribution of Scholarship cheques to students who received it on 2nd October, an auspicious day for all  in India. Inspite of heavy rains and a bus strike,  8 students turned up to receive the cheques from the hands of Dr Dhanada Misra, SC Choudhury and Meera Choudhury ,Trustees of Vikash Educational Charitable Trust. The boys came alone and the girls were accompanied with their parents/guardians. There was a feeling of welcome, joy and bonhomie. The facilitators of the Trust served cold drinks and sweets to the students and the parents. These students are from a really poor strata of the society and bright ones at that. They are studying ENGG and Medicine in the best colleges of the state. They are sure to make their career, uplift their families and contribute back to the society.
We feel greatly indebted and humbled by the munificience of the LBW Trust and its Trustees. We hope our association would grow stronger in years to come.”
