Lighting Up Futures: Jenny Thompson visits CandleAid

The LBW Trust (Learning for a Better World) believes that education is the pathway to a better future.

On April 1st 2023, Jenny Thompson embarked on a remarkable journey with Her World Cricket Tour.

Not only is she playing and writing about women's cricket across the globe, but she's also dedicated to a cause close to her heart: fundraising for The LBW Trust. This incredible journey began in Hong Kong on April 1st, 2023 and since then, Jenny has visited and played cricket in 61 countries. (last update: April 5th, 2024)

But it's not just about cricket; Jenny is using her platform to highlight issues that matter. One such issue is education, and her partnership with CandleAid in Sri Lanka is a testament to this commitment

Jenny's stops have been uplifting, but we're particularly proud of her recent visit to CandleAid in Sri Lanka. Here, Jenny witnessed firsthand the power of education to change lives and illuminate futures.

CandleAid, founded by Dil and Elmo, operates under the belief that even the smallest act of kindness can dispel the darkness of ignorance and inequality. Their mission resonates deeply with Jenny, who understands the transformative power of education.

During her visit, Jenny had the pleasure of meeting four inspiring students whose resilience and determination are awe-inspiring. Among them is Sachith, whose achievement of First Class Honours in Marine Sciences & Technology is a testament to his hard work and dedication.

Despite facing numerous challenges, including tear gas and water cannons during student protests, Sachith remains undeterred in his pursuit of knowledge and excellence.

Alongside Sachith, Jenny met Ashani, Dulanjani, and Ashenaponsu, each with a unique story of perseverance. From pursuing degrees in Plant Biotechnology and Ayurvedic Medicine to aspiring to become a Chartered Accountant, these students exemplify the resilience of the human spirit in the face of adversity.

What strikes Jenny the most is the stark reality that talent knows no bounds, yet opportunity often remains elusive for many. CandleAid's efforts to bridge this gap and provide access to education to those in need are commendable, and Jenny is proud to support their cause.

Through her fundraising efforts for The LBW Trust, Jenny aims to empower students like Sachith, Ashani, Dulanjani, and Ashenaponsu to realise their dreams and uplift their communities. By contributing to her campaign, individuals have the opportunity to make a tangible difference in the lives of these students and their families.

As Jenny continues Her World Cricket Tour, she leaves with a renewed sense of purpose and determination.
