Time Magazine shines a light on the Kakenya Center for Excellence
Updated: Sep 7
When the collective minds of Amal Clooney, Melinda French Gates and Michelle Obama come together they shine a light on important issues. We at Women for Change and The LBW Trust welcome this important discussion which has been the subject of a recent article in Time magazine highlighting the work of activists, celebrities, and leaders who are working to end child marriage and create a better future for girls around the world. Among them is Dr Kakenya Ntaiya, whose students we have been supporting with tertiary education.
The LBW Trust and Women for Change are delighted to have supported graduates of the Kakenya Center for Excellence since 2016. During that time we have seen the first class of graduates from the Kakenya Center of Excellence complete their final university exams. All 24 students received a scholarship for tertiary studies, thanks to the generosity of our supporters.
Child marriage is a significant problem in many parts of the world, particularly in developing countries. It is estimated that 12 million girls are married before the age of 18 every year, often with much older men, and this has devastating consequences for their health, education, and future prospects.
The Kakenya Center for Excellence offers a high-quality education to girls who might not otherwise have access to it. It also provides them with life skills and leadership training, as well as health education and support. Dr Ntaiya believes that education is key to ending child marriage, as it gives girls the knowledge and confidence they need to make their own choices about their lives.
The Kakenya Center for Excellence has already had a significant impact, helping to reduce the rate of child marriage in the surrounding area by 50%. The school has also inspired other girls in the community to pursue their education and has created a network of empowered young women who are working to make a difference in their own communities.
Dr. Ntaiya's work is just one example of the many efforts being made to end child marriage. Amal Clooney, Melinda French Gates, and Michelle Obama are just a few of the high-profile figures who have joined the cause. Together, they are raising awareness, advocating for policy changes, and supporting programs like the Kakenya Center for Excellence.
The LBW Trust charity is also doing its part to support education and empower young women around the world. The charity works to provide educational opportunities and resources to young people in disadvantaged communities, with a focus on cricket-playing nations. Through their partnerships with local organizations, they are helping to create a better future for the next generation.
We believe that education is a fundamental right for all children and that every child should have the opportunity to reach their full potential.
We continue to be inspired by the work of Dr Kakenya Ntaiya and the many others who are working to end child marriage and create a brighter future for girls around the world. We are committed to supporting education and empowerment initiatives that help young people break free from the cycle of poverty and achieve their dreams. Join us in supporting this important cause.
